~Empowering the Preemie Parent~
Peek-a-boo ICU was created to provide support to parents as they face the emotional journey of the NICU– Empowering parents with knowledge, offering support, and encouragement along the way.
The NICU is never in anyone’s birth plan. Parents are thrown into a world they don’t know and never expected, drenched in fear of the unknown. All too often they are given information they don’t understand and are faced with a future that is so uncertain. They don’t know what to ask, how to act, and often feel overwhelmed and lost along the way.
This website was created to offer parents with easy to understand information that pertains to the NICU and premature birth–Answering the questions that parents may have and offering emotional support as well as the NICU nurses perspective on all things neonatal.
The emotional journey that accompanies the NICU is difficult. Parents often feel alone, isolated, depressed, fearful, and uncertain. All this can take a huge toll on parents. The emotional impact can be lifelong and life changing. Having support along the way can make a big difference! It’s important for parents to know that they are not alone and there are people out there that can relate.
Our Facebook page is a community that offers support and allows other like individuals to “be there” for each other along the way–through the rough and tough times and also to rejoice and cheer each other on in the happy moments.
Healthcare professionals are very good at the medical aspects of the NICU but often lack the proper ways to offer support for the important emotional aspect of the journey. Not knowing what to say, when to say it, or if it’s even the appropriate time to engage with parents.
The Journey Beads and Bracelets collection was created as a way to acknowledge the journey and the emotional aspect of parenting a preemie. It was created as a way commemorate the baby’s time spent in the NICU, to recognize the emotions, remember the milestones, and reflect on the trials and triumphs that make their story their very own. It gives the parents something tangible to tell and record their baby’s story and helps them find some joy in the journey–giving strength, courage, hope, and healing along the way. Our program is currently based outside of the NICU walls but we do offer some support to parents currently on the NICU journey through sponsorship programs, giving back offering our beads and bands as they face the long and difficult road.
Founder and facilitator
I have been a Registered Nurse for 17 years. I currently work full time in a single room family centered care level 3 NICU. I am a member of NANN; National Association of Neonatal Nurses, A Developmental Care Specialist, BLS and NRP certified as well as S.T.A.B.L.E. trained. I am the creator and owner of PeekabooICU.net and PeekabooICU.org as well as the Peek-a-Boo ICU Facebook page and Twitter feed.
PeekabooICU.net was created to provide information to parents that have or have had a premature baby or a baby in the NICU and seek support from those who have been in a similar situation- as well as empowering parents with the knowledge necessary to make it through the tough times that come along with having a child in the NICU. All too often the information given in the NICU is full of medical terms that are so hard to understand. Through the website, I hope to make it easier for parents and families to understand some of what they may be experiencing and empower them with knowledge.
The stories, articles, and posts on Peek-a-boo ICU are inspired by my 17 years of nursing practice. However, the personal stories shared do not reflect any specific patient, family, staff, or facility. If you believe you are reading a story about a particular patient, their family, nurse, or individual, you are incorrect. Peek-a-boo ICU will never share individually identifiable information. We are committed to providing and protecting patient privacy. Any information that appears on our FB page, blog, or website that contains personal information was pre consented by the individual who shared it with Peek-a-boo ICU.
We are simply a community for parents of preemies and those who have spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care or those who have a specific interest in neonatal care. Our purpose is to provide support, encouragement, and education but we are not here to provide medical advice.
Please know that my opinions are strictly my own and in no way reflect that of any institution or organization. I offer advice, support, and experience based on my education and role as a NICU Nurse. This should in no way be construed as a substitution for the recommendations of your medical provider. Please make sure to check with your child’s doctor or healthcare provider before implementing any changes.
